The most beautiful wedding venues in Loire-Atlantique

I’ve been lucky enough to film weddings in Loire-Atlantique for years. And every venue has its own light, its own soul.

The banks of the Erdre

It’s called the most beautiful river in France. The estates along it offer golden reflections at the end of the day that give films a light you find nowhere else. Château Le Saz in La Chapelle-sur-Erdre is a perfect example. It’s the area I cover most often as a wedding videographer in Nantes.

For video, the Erdre has one precise advantage. The water bounces the evening light back onto faces. A couple session on the riverbank, around seven in the evening in June, gives soft images without any added lighting.

The Nantes vineyards

Clisson, Vallet, Le Pallet. The Muscadet vines stretch as far as the eye can see. The Jardin de Cleray, for instance, mixes stone and greenery in a way that makes every shot naturally beautiful. In summer, the light there stays golden until ten at night.

The rows of vines also draw perfect lines for aerial images. It’s one of the areas of the department where the drone brings the most, when the wind allows it.

Châteaux and manors

Loire-Atlantique is full of estates that tell centuries of history. Stone walls, lime-tree avenues, formal gardens. These venues give films a natural depth and elegance.

One detail matters for video: château interiors are often dark. An outdoor-style ceremony in an orangery or under a glass roof gives far more beautiful light than a drawing room with narrow windows. Ask the venue before you fix where the ceremony will take place.

The coast

From Pornic to La Baule, the Atlantic coast offers a completely different register. Wind, changing light, an endless horizon. A seaside wedding has something raw and free about it that translates beautifully on film. I regularly film on the Guérande peninsula, from Pornichet to Le Croisic.

Wind is the point to watch. It disturbs the sound of outdoor vows and can keep the drone on the ground. Plan a slightly sheltered spot for the ceremony, or accept that the sound will be picked up by microphones placed as close as possible.

The heart of Nantes

The city itself is a backdrop. The Île de Nantes, the Passage Pommeraye, the banks of the Loire. For couples who choose an urban wedding, Nantes offers unexpected settings full of character. Parking and access slots need planning ahead, especially at the Passage Pommeraye.

In the city, the drone is almost always ruled out. It doesn’t matter: the façades, the bridges and the reflections on the Loire give more than enough material from the ground.

What I check on a site visit

When I don’t yet know a venue, I go and see it before the wedding, or I have a long conversation with the manager. Here is what I look at, in order:

1. Where the light comes from at ceremony time. Sun straight into the couple’s faces changes everything.
2. Where the vows and speeches will take place, to position the microphones and anticipate echo.
3. A calm, beautiful spot, less than five minutes’ walk away, for the couple session.
4. The rain plan, and its light.
5. The flight restriction map and the owner’s agreement for the drone.
6. Distances: changing rooms, hall, garden, dance floor, so as not to miss anything between two highlights.

This site visit takes an hour. It avoids almost every unpleasant surprise on the day. When a visit isn’t possible, because the venue is far away or booked every weekend, I ask the manager for a few photos taken at the time of the ceremony, and I arrive earlier on the morning of the wedding to walk the grounds before the guests do.

Five criteria for choosing your venue when you want a film

If video matters to you, add these criteria to your visit. They don’t replace the love-at-first-sight feeling, they inform it.

• Natural light in the ceremony and dining rooms. The more windows, the softer the images.
• The possible timings. A venue that imposes a midday ceremony in high summer robs you of the beautiful light.
• Unity of place. Preparations, ceremony and party in the same spot give a smoother film, and less time lost in transfers.
• Access for vendors: where to park, which way in, at what time.
• The space around: a park, an avenue, a riverbank. That’s where the images that let the film breathe are shot.

The questions to ask the venue before signing

• At what time does the light enter the ceremony room?
• Where do the ceremony and the cocktail take place if it rains?
• Are drone flights accepted, and is written permission required?
• Until what time is music allowed outdoors?
• Is there a quiet room for the preparations, with daylight?

What really matters

In the end, the most beautiful wedding venue is the one that looks like you. Some couples dream of a château, others of a simple garden. What I know is that every venue in Loire-Atlantique has its own light. And that light is what I look for every time.
